Mozilla Foundation is working on developing an Open Source Badge system, but that's still in the works. Here's some information on badges from Edutopia.
Badges are sent to the recipient once certain criteria are met, or once a panel of peers/judges agrees that a skill or competency has been sufficiently developed. Badges don't replace report cards or marks, but they do allow for learning that takes place outside of school, informally, or over the internet to be recognized.
Ms. Malloff will send out the badges once the criteria are met. You can then put them on your eportfolio. Can badges be "copied and pasted?" Possibly, but unlikely--you'd have to prove that you've met the criteria, and presented first. It would be embarassing and dishonest to put a badge on your eportfolio for something you didn't rightfully earn.
We're trying out the badge system for the remainder of the semester to see how it works for us!
