Post a mid-term Major Technology Project reflection on your blog:
Where are you at with your project and why?
What is an area of strength (ie/ competencies)? What is an area of challenge/concern?
What is something to work on/next steps toward completion/challenges or issues have you faced?
When are you planning to complete?
If you have your Major Technology Project completed, add it to your ePortfolio on either the most appropriate competency page, or on a separate page with project name. You must write a reflection:
Describe your project.
What competencies were addressed in your project, and how?
What challenges and successes have you had?
What, if anything, did you learn about yourself in self-directed project-based learning?
On Tuesday, we'll be working with our storyboards, potentially acting out what we'd like to film in our "Teach Me" tutorials. Only when you've completed your storyboard to a Satisfactory or High level of achievement, will you be able to film it.
W'll also complete our Digital Story reflections, and post them to our eportfolios (Communications page).
Here's the sequence and activities for the class:
1. Digital Storytelling (20 minutes)
a. Reflections: Open MS Word, and complete your reflection. Share with a partner, or with class.
Grade 8's: post to your ePortfolio on your Communications page. Grade 7's, post to your Lunar Eportfolio if you can--if not, I'll help you next class.
b. Digital Story: Post your Digital Story to your eportfolio either as a Youtube link/embed, or as a
file upload. Or, you can select some .jpg (image) slides and insert them onto your Bio page.
2. "Teach Me" Tutorial (60 minutes)
a. Take out your current storyboards and scripts. Make sure each person in your team has a copy.
If you still don't know what to do, you should pick your topic NOW!
b. Handout: Storyboard Assignment. Go over with class. Have students do a brief assessment
of their storyboard.
c. Watch the following video to get a sense of what storyboarding is about:
Discuss: shots and angles
d. Students rework storyboards for 15 minutes at their desks (rm 201 may be available), then
evaluate against criteria (peer).
e. Once storyboards are complete to a satisfactory level, then students may film their piece. If
filming in the gym they MUST get permission from the teacher (send with a note). Other
students may use the LIBRARY with a note, and a time limit (20 mins). Do not let students
loose--they will have time for an in-class break for five minutes. Students without a project
must help peers storyboard and film.
f. Students may begin to edit their footage using Windows Movie Maker or iMovie (iPads) if
available. They should stick to their storyboards closely.
g. Students submit storyboards with a REFLECTION on the back of the sheet on how they did,
This week in Digital Literacy, we'll be finishing our Digital Story presentations: Abby, Alicia, Cassidy, Devon, Eric, Ethan, Kira, Megan, Meghan, Quinn, and Terra-Mae will be presenting.
We'll also have eportfolio time to add our reflections for our Digital Stories. Your reflections should include:
How did I do?
How do I know?
What might I think of next time?
Please upload your Digital Story to the homepage of your eportfolio (or at least upload the powerpoint file).
You will be earning your first digital badge for completing your Digital Story if:
DS has sufficient visuals and balance of text
DS shows who you are in some depth--we get to know you better!
Speaker presented to class, was prepared and spoke clearly/well
DS was uploaded to eportfolio homepage
A reflection (see 3 questions above) was posted to your eportfolio (Communication page)
This week in InfoTech 9, we'll be completing our Digital Story presentations, involving peer feedback. You'll be earning a digital badge for your work on your Digital Story if you meet the following criteria:
DS is visually engaging, balancing text with clear graphics
DS is a positive, appropriate reflection of you as a person in some depth
DS is exported as a movie to youtube and embedded onto eportfolio homepage (or linked)
Speaker was prepared and spoke clearly, made eye contact, aware of body language
A reflection was completed and posted to your eportfolio Communication page
Please post your reflection to your Communication page on your eportfolio. Include:
How Did I Do?
How Do I Know?
How Did I Meet Criteria? (visual presentation, oral presentation skills)
I will return your Major Technology Proposals for any redos. Please post a copy (without your address or mine, just the project proposal) on your BLOG. Include your plan for the week:
What I'm focussing on?
What skills and/or competencies am I trying to build?
What's working well? What do I need to work on?
Remember to check our class calendar for dates and deadlines on our website. Early dismissal week!
1. Digital Stories: finished, uploaded to youtube, and embedded into your portfolio
2. Registered account for an eportfolio (Lunar or Google Site)
a.) Add evidence to your eportfolio (assignments, videos, photos, with a description)
Guess what? It's time to get started on your Major Technology Project in InfoTech 9.
First of all, figure out what you might be interested in trying, and why (possible career, interest/hobby, solve a community problem, try something new/exploration)
Step One: Your first step today is to find inspiration of someone or something that's a great example of what you'd hope to accomplish. See videos below for examples. It could be a photo or website, too. Post this INSPIRATION to your blog, and say why....
Step Two: Second step is to write Ms. T. Malloff a cover letter explaining your project. You'll see the template in the Gr9 Shared Folder on your desktop. Print ONLY when you've spell checked and got the address right!
When it's approved, post the outline to YOUR BLOG.
Then, you can PLAY with the idea, try some stuff, and get your brain wrapped around how your project might work...how cool is that?
purpose, list and definitions of learning competencies
identified attributes of an Independent Learner
Here is what students identified as Independent Learning:
is able to stay focussed and work independently
knows how to troubleshoot problems, and tries independently first
knows how to find resources (class website, youtube, blog, google search, peers)
works with others, learns from others, helps others when appropriate
if things go wrong, keeps trying in different ways
self-paces and plans for learning
We also worked on our Digital Stories, with the goal of completing them this week!
about 12 slides
heavy on simple visuals, low on text (title only)
to be narrated (narration notes go under powerpoint slides)
export powerpoint as .jpeg (series of pictures)
use Windows Movie Maker or iMovie on iPads to create.
Digital stories are biographies told in images and words, digitally.
Here is the link to the assignment, which will become part of your eportfolios.

Welcome back to a new year! We've got a great semester ahead of us with some pretty cool and cutting edge projects that will stretch your learning, I think... I had a great summer: relaxed, went to the beach, and whitewater rafting with my family in Lytton. It was amazing! I hope your summer was great, too, and that you're ready to go.
This blog is for both InfoTech 9and Digital Literacy & Healthy Living. See the website links on the sidebar. Bookmark them. You have a series of challenges: 1. Sign up for Gmail. Get a password you'll remember. Fill out the form to send me your email. Get the GMail app, if you haven't already (it's free). 2. Do the Technology Survey on your course homepage. 3. Sign up for Blogger and fill out the form so I get you blog link. If you have a device, get the Blogger app (should be free). If you have a digital device, you're welcome to bring it, but....make sure you sign and return the RUA!!! If this is your first year with us, you'll need to have your parents/guardians sign the permission for social media form I will give you. Check out your course website, and have a look at the projects! PS/ check out the blog posts below to see what we did last year...
If you're thinking of collecting evidence of your learning, try "Easy Portfolio" an app available on iTunes. You can collect evidence in the following formats: audio, notes, urls, docs, videos, images.
Last week our two classes (HCE/InfoTech) got together to take a look at our eportfolios and see how powerful our evidence of learning under each of the competencies was. Here is one group doing their presentation.
The DRAFT Gr 9 Learning Competencies Rubric will be passed out in class this week. Take a minute to add evidence of your learning this year to your eportfolio. We WILL be conferencing with the Gr 11's soon, so you'll want to be prepared...
This week:
1. 3D Virtual World--must have your building done in 7 or fewer classes (June 7th)
2. Individual Projects---Conferencing check-in in early June; you should be mostly complete by then
Post on your blog:
1. What progress am I making this week? (show an example of your photo, or a screenshot of what you're working on!)
2. What am I learning (independently?) Be specific as possible.
3. What challenges do I have?
4. What are next steps for the week?
It's official! We've begun the building phase of our BCNexus Activeworlds build. Our project is called "Dreamworld Island," as it involves the interests and talents of our Grade 9 InfoTech students. We're combining an Independent Digital Exploration Project (choice of videography, photography, design, and gaming/programming) with 3D immersive technology to learn about Digital Citizenship, and to build skills in areas of specific technology interest. This is a pilot project, and our students are "pioneers" in this educational technology! There are only eight other such "worlds" being built in B.C. in this pilot project.
Dreamworld Island Begins...
Students are planning and building according to their areas of interest as outlined in their eportfolios, so we have planned a town with the following: bakery, recreation centre, performing arts theatre, movie theatre, town hall, health clinic, mechanics and auto shop/car dealership, aesthetics salon, veterinary clinic and animal shelter. Students will be posting career information in each of their places of business.
On Monday, we had a Skype session with Mr. Gordon Holden, an expert and pioneer teacher in 3D immersive technology here in B.C.. He showed us some amazing things about 3D worlds, and toured us through his own beautiful StoryForge World. We are so grateful to have his expertise and willingness to share with us!
We have a Leadership Team whose role it is to coordinate, communicate, plan, and establish laws and a Building Team whose job it is to plan, terraform, build infrastructure, acquire objects, and help classmates build their businesses. We may even establish an economy. So far, there's lots of excitement as everyone is in the initial stages of planning, outlining, diagramming, and learning how to navigate their way in a digital world. Who knows where our learning journey will take us!
A. Independent Project:
Today, after you've logged in to Moodle, check your Independent Project link (videography, photography, gaming, design, etc.), and do the following:
1. Say what you are doing for your Independent Project, who you are working with, and what you hope to learn. Add to the "Upload Project Plan" link. I will give you feedback.
2. Browse inspiration photos, videos, or favourite games, movies, designs--whatever relates to your project. Upload to your blog (The outline to this activity is on your Independent Project link)!
B. Dreamworld:
1. Leadership Team: Malin, Marco, Sarah H, Kaden --> please come up with an island shape, and look over proposal to okay sending it off. Add an introduction.
2. Building Team: Kaden, Tie, Sarah, Andrew, Christian, Natalie, Brett, Marco, Jesse, Lucas R, Oliver C-L, Natalie --> please smooth out edges of beach.
The following people will have home contact for overdue eportfolios:
Kevin W, Nik B, Clayton M, Eden S, Callie S, Shianne G, Ann B, Marco S, Jen P, Josh C.
I've been going through student blogs and some eportfolios, and we're coming along fairly well.
First, take a look at the blog post below if you've missed last class before Spring Break. It will tell you what we needed to accomplish with regard to eportfolios.
Here is a list of students who don't have a blog link sent to me yet (or one that doesn't work):
Sara N
Rebecca R
Eden S
Madison D
Oliver C-L
Marco S
Mikayla T
Kevin W
This week, here's what's on board:
1. Practice logging in to our InfoTech 9 Moodle course (upload eportfolio link to eportfolio module)
2. Discuss and Plan for our DreamWorld Island ActiveWorlds BCNexus Project
3. Thursday, March 29th: skype call with Gordon Holden, teacher
Thursday, we'll be planning the terraform of our Island, and each group will join the wikispace and begin drafting their building. We'll determine some of the laws and guidelines to live in a Digital World, and also work on our Independent Projects, too. An exciting week!
We've spent the last few classes combined with HCE 9 to do our HCE 9 Oral Biography Presentations. The written component of the presentations will be put on the homepage of your eportfolios.
Where you should be at this week:
1. Upload you HCE 9 Oral Presentation Rubric to your Communication & Expression Page
2. Upload your Eportfolio Rubric to your Independent Learning Page
Please comment on each addressing the following:
1. How did I do?
2. How do I know?
3. What comes next for me?
After Spring Break, we'll be working on our Technology Wikipedia Project.
Last week, we finished our Keyboarding Unit. We did an online Typing Test, and a Skill Drill (printed and submitted). If you haven't done so already, you will have to make an arrangement with Ms. Malloff to come in at lunch.
Eportfolios:
1. Complete the checklist (handed out in class). Are you missing anything? Make a plan to complete.
2. HCE 9/ InfoTech 9 Classes will be held together on Wednesday and Friday for Biography/Eportfolio Presentations.
3. New Project: Technology Wikipedia (Due before Spring Break).
Your Blog:
1. Add your plan for the week. What do you need to do? How and when will it get done?
2. What is your Self-Directed Learning Focus for the week?
3. What is your Technology Wikipedia Topic? Who are you working with?
What's on board for the week of Monday February 20th to Thursday, February 23rd:
1. Keyboarding Practice for 10 minutes. Record Results. We will have a final Keyboarding Skills Test on Thursday, February 23rd. If you are away, we'll make up at lunch.
2. Last week, we worked on our eportfolios. Do you have the following completed?
Basic Google Site set up
Homepage with a biogrpahy and photo
Pages for each of the 7 Competencies (see InfoTech Website, under "Eportfolios)
Special Interest Page (if applicable)
You want to make sure you have evidence under the competencies (see your planning sheet), with a Learning Statement (How does this artefact represent my learning under this Competency?)
Deadline for set up and having at least three pieces of evidence is Thursday, February 23rd.
3. New project! Technology Wikipedia. Partner with someone in class, and choose a technology of your choice, or from the list we create. You will be developing a Wikipedia page on that Technology that clearly explains:
Self-Directed Learning is when a person is able to set goals, manage priorities, stay focussed, and complete a project or assignment. We'll be focussing on this Key Competency (Independent Learning) for the EPortfolio project.
Today, we'll do the following:
1. Ten minute keyboarding skills (have you set a goal, are you making an effort to improve?)
2. Finish Setting up your EPortfolio according to the guidelines on our InfoTech 9 Website
3. Choose a topic for our Technology Wikipedia Class Project (with a partner) on our Google Doc
4. Posting on your Blog (link should be sent to me) with the Self-Directed Learning rubric as a prompt (take any aspect and comment on how you're doing, what your struggles are, and what you're working on)
